Hanoi splits into two tiers: about eight sights inside the city that fit in two or three days, and four day trips that each eat a day or more. Entry fees inside the city are tiny, with Ngoc Son Temple at 50,000 VND, the Temple of Literature at 70,000 VND and the mausoleum free. If stitching the trips together sounds like a chore, that part can be handed off.
How much of Hanoi fits into one day?
One day covers the core: Hoan Kiem Lake with Ngoc Son Temple in the morning, the Temple of Literature after lunch, and the Old Quarter by evening. Add the mausoleum only if the calendar allows, because it opens on limited days and hours. Everything sits within a short Grab ride, usually 30,000-60,000 VND, and for a slower two-day pace see our Hanoi in 2 days plan with real prices .

Which Hanoi sights are free, and which cost money?
Free: the lake path around Hoan Kiem, the Old Quarter streets, the One Pillar Pagoda and the mausoleum itself. Paid: Ngoc Son Temple (50,000 VND, reached by a red bridge onto a small island), the Temple of Literature (70,000 VND, Vietnam’s first university, founded in 1070, open daily) and the Ho Chi Minh Museum next to the mausoleum (40,000 VND). For scale, 26,000 VND is roughly one US dollar.

Check the mausoleum before you plan around it. One source reports that it closes for annual maintenance from September 4 to November 4, 2026, and in normal weeks it is shut on Mondays and Fridays. No official confirmation was found.
What can you do in Hanoi when it is raining or too hot?
Go indoors and slow down. The Hoa Lo Prison museum, a French colonial jail that later held American pilots and earned the nickname “Hanoi Hilton”, tells a heavy but interesting story in a few hours. The Vietnamese Women’s Museum is quieter. Tran Quoc Pagoda, the oldest temple in Hanoi, and the cafes around West Lake work for a lazy afternoon. Summer runs from May to August, July is the hottest month, and heavy rain is common.
Which famous Hanoi stops are easy to skip?
The water puppet show (100,000-150,000 VND) got a lukewarm reception from several 2026 travel writers, who called it overpriced. Hoa Lo makes less sense if you have already done the war museum in Ho Chi Minh City. The train street, where residents clear their tables as the train squeezes past, is a famous photo, but access for visitors has been restricted at times, so do not build a day around it.

Where should you go beyond Hanoi: Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, Sapa or the Perfume Pagoda?
Choose by days available, not by scenery, because all four are good and only two fit into a short trip.

The Perfume Pagoda, a cluster of cave temples in the limestone Huong Tich mountain about 60 km southwest of the city, is the shortest outing. Most of the cave temples date to the 17th century.
Ninh Binh means boat rides along the Tam Coc or Trang An rivers between limestone karst, plus the viewpoint on Mua hill. A single day works, but two nights is better, and our Ninh Binh guide explains the split. Ha Long Bay is a cruise among karst islands and caves, and the boat you pick changes the experience, so read the Ha Long cruise comparison first. Sapa has terraced fields and valleys and the longest travel time; do not squeeze it into a day. If Hanoi is only the start of a longer trip, our 15-day route from north to south shows how the pieces link up.
Here is where these plans usually fall apart: each trip runs on its own timetable, and local tour operators do not always accept foreign cards. I put these trips in order around your dates, and some of them already exist as ready-made author-led routes across Vietnam . Message me on Telegram and I will suggest a sequence.
When is the best time to visit Hanoi?
September to November and March to April. Winter, from December to February, is colder than many visitors expect and can fall below 10°C.
You can absolutely plan Hanoi and the day trips yourself: tickets, roads and hotels are easy separately, and it is the connections between them that eat days. If you would rather have one clear schedule, send me your dates and how many days you can spare, and I will lay out the order: message me on Telegram @vietnam_samurai.
