“What do I do if I’ve overstayed my Vietnam visa?” — that’s the most common DM we get. Comes in at 11 PM, right after the line “flight tomorrow, visa expired yesterday.” Relax — it’s a one-day fix via the Lao Bao border from Da Nang. Immigration will charge 500,000 to 1,250,000 VND ($20-50) per day of overstay — not a posted fine, more like the officer’s mood. Plus 2 million VND for fast-track. Below: 6 real cases and the playbook.

What an overstay is and why it doesn’t fix itself

Passports at the airport — the main documents when leaving with an expired visa

Overstay = any visa or visa-free stay in Vietnam exceeded by even one day. Immigration logs the overrun on exit. They won’t “miss it”, they won’t “let it slide” — they’ll see it and start the conversation about money.

What that means in practice:

  • Every overstay day costs money. Not at an official rate but at officer discretion: at the same border on the same day, different officers charge different amounts.
  • Re-entry ban — anywhere from 3 months to 5 years, issued for big overstays or repeat offences.
  • While you’re inside the country with an expired visa you can’t properly apply for a new e-visa or start TRC paperwork — the system blocks applications with an active violation.

The only way to reset is to physically leave the country. The alternative is to extend the visa without exiting — but that only works while the visa is still valid. Once you’ve overstayed, exit is the only path: the airport route is a one-way ticket from Da Nang to Bangkok plus a return — $200+, and you still need to come back. The Lao Bao land border is cheaper and faster, which is why most of our cases went that way.

Why Lao Bao from Da Nang specifically

Lao Bao is the closest land border to Da Nang for anyone living in central Vietnam. About 250 km along Route 9, 4 hours by car or 5 hours by bus. There’s no other option from Da Nang that matches it on time-vs-cost.

Alternatives for context:

  • Moc Bai (Cambodia) from Ho Chi Minh City — close to Saigon, but from Da Nang it’s a flight or 18+ hours by bus to even get to the start.

The Laos side issues visa-on-arrival (VOA) at the border for $30-45 depending on your passport. No prep work needed — you arrive, fill out a form, get a stamp. Coming back into Vietnam is normally done on an existing Vietnam e-visa or a fresh one filed in advance at evisa.gov.vn (~$25, ready in 3 working days). Without a valid Vietnam visa you won’t be let back in: Vietnam doesn’t issue VOA at Lao Bao.

Real 2026 costs: what 6 cases showed

In the six cases our team handled in 2026, the per-day overstay charge at Vietnam immigration ranged from 500,000 to 1,250,000 VND ($20-50). It’s not a fixed fine off a tariff sheet — it’s the officer’s mood and how the day is going at the booth. In the same week, clients with identical 1-day overstays paid wildly different amounts.

One specific case from our practice (client name withheld) hit the upper end: exit from Da Nang via Lao Bao with overstay, cleared in one day. The receipts:

  • Immigration payment for one day of overstay: 1.25 million VND (~$50)
  • Fast-track at the booth: 2 million VND (~$80)
  • Total at immigration only: 3.25 million VND (~$130)

On top: Laos VOA ($30-45), transport from Da Nang and back (1-3 million VND depending on mode), a new Vietnam e-visa ($25 — or DM us via the Telegram bot at the bottom of this article and we can have the visa ready in 3 hours, same-day visa run). If your overstay is more than one day, the immigration amount scales linearly (multiplied by the number of days).

One-day plan

Real queue at Lao Bao immigration

If you’re going solo and want to clear it in 24 hours:

  1. 3-5 days before exit — apply for a new Vietnam e-visa if you need one, or rely on visa-free entry if your passport allows.
  2. Cash up — 5-10 million VND for the daily overstay charge, the Laos visa (if needed) and transport. There’s an ATM on the Vietnam side, but using one in the queue is asking for trouble.
  3. Leave Da Nang — DM us for the schedule; cars and buses run that route almost every day.
  4. Vietnam side — go to the immigration window, explain the situation, pay the amount they name (be ready for 500K-1.25M VND per day). Want fast-track? We can sort it via Telegram.
  5. Laos side — fill in the VOA form. Small tips of ~20K VND smooth things along.
  6. Back into Vietnam — same border, entry on the new visa, fresh stamp. Overstay cleared.

When to hand it off to the team

Kia Carnival leather interior — our transport for overstay cases out of Da Nang

If a 4 AM departure, cash in multiple currencies, and haggling at a border booth aren’t your idea of a normal day, it makes sense to delegate. Our Da Nang team handled all 6 overstay cases in 2026 the same way: car with driver, e-visa filed in advance, help on the immigration side. Total cost usually lands at solo-trip price plus ~$120 for express 9-day visa with guarantee (or visa-free if your passport works) and full escort — minus 6 hours in queue and minus the chance of a paperwork screw-up.

PS: don’t push your luck at the border — paying an overstay fine is a gift compared to what it used to be. Six months ago it was straight deportation back to your home country. So let’s preserve this excellent service — and try not to overstay again.
