Elderly parents do best in Vietnam on a slow schedule: one base for two or three nights, no more than three hours of road in a day, and sightseeing wrapped up before the midday heat. Da Nang reaches a daily high of 35.0 °C in June, so the month you pick and the rhythm of each day matter more than the list of sights. I live in Da Nang and have run tours around Vietnam since 2023, and this is the checklist I go through with people who are planning a trip for their parents.
How many hours on the road are realistic per day?
My limit for older guests is three hours on wheels per day and one change of city every two or three days. Hanoi to Ninh Binh, Hanoi to Ha Long and Da Nang to Hue all fit that limit. Hanoi to Sapa does not fit into a day trip, and Hanoi to Da Nang by road takes 10-12 hours, so I book a flight for that leg.

| Leg | How you travel | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Hanoi to Ninh Binh | private car on the expressway | 1 h 25 min-1 h 45 min |
| Hanoi to Ha Long | private car on the expressway | 2 h 15 min-2 h 30 min |
| Da Nang to Hue | car through the Hai Van tunnel | about 2 h |
| Hanoi to Sapa | car on the expressway | 4 h-5 h 30 min |
| Hanoi to Da Nang | plane | 1 h 20 min |
| Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City | plane | 1 h 20 min-1 h 30 min |
Taking the Hai Van Pass instead of the tunnel adds up to three hours or more to the Da Nang to Hue drive. Express buses to Sapa need 5-6 hours because of stops, which is why Sapa deserves its own overnight stay. The night train from Hanoi to Da Nang takes 15-16 hours, while Vietnam Airlines lists about 20 flights a day on the same route.
Which stops have stairs, and how do you skip them?
Vietnam has plenty of steps, but most stops offer a way around them. The Marble Mountains have a lift beside a staircase of about 156 steps, Ba Na Hills puts you on the mountain by cable car, and every shore excursion on a Ha Long cruise is optional, so your parents can stay on board.

- Marble Mountains. The steps inside the caves are steep and slippery, so see the caves with a guide. The site is open 7:00-17:30 and is calmest between 7:00 and 8:30.
- Ba Na Hills. The cable car, the Golden Bridge and the French Village come on one ticket, and the park runs roughly 8:00-22:00. Prices and cable car hours differ between sources, so check the current numbers in our Ba Na Hills ticket guide .
- Hue Imperial City. A visit takes 2-3 hours on stone paths several kilometres long with almost no shade. The gates open at 6:30 in summer and 7:00 in winter, so arrive at opening, and the Hue Imperial City guide covers the route.
- Ha Long cruise. Boarding often means steep steps or planks without handrails from a small tender, and the ship itself has two or three decks of stairs. Luxury ships board more comfortably, and the Ha Long cruise comparison shows which ones.
- Fansipan. A cable car takes you up, and the summit is about 10 °C colder than Sapa town. The number of steps and the prices vary between sources, so confirm both before you go.
Which month keeps the heat manageable?
The best month depends on the region: March-May and October-November in the north, February-April in the centre, and December-February in the south. In Da Nang, Hoi An and Hue, rain and typhoons run from September to December and peak in October-November. The table shows the daily high of the hottest month, based on the 1991-2020 climate norm.

| City | Hottest month | Daily high | Best months to visit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hanoi | June | 34.0 °C | March-May, October-November |
| Da Nang and Hoi An | June | 35.0 °C | February-April |
| Ho Chi Minh City | April | 35.1 °C | December-February |
| Nha Trang | June | 32.7 °C | February-May |
| Sapa | July | 23.0 °C | March-May, October-November |
Sapa sits at about 1,500 m, with summer days of 22-23 °C and only 12.5 °C in January. The middle of the day is the hottest part everywhere, so plan outdoor sights for the morning and the late afternoon, and keep midday for the hotel. Floods are possible in Hoi An and Hue during the rainy season, and the December weather guide by region shows how the centre behaves late in the year.
Which region should you pick for a first visit?
For a first visit I pick one region and stay there. Central Vietnam is the most compact, because Hoi An sits next to Da Nang and Hue is a two-hour drive through the tunnel, so one base covers three cities. The window is February-April, before the rains.

The north works with Hanoi as a base and short trips out. Ninh Binh and Ha Long each fit into a day, but June brings 34.0 °C to Hanoi, so October-November or March-May is the safer choice. The south stays at 32-35 °C almost all year, with the hottest weeks in March-May and rain from May to mid-November.
How can parents stay connected after landing?
Airport kiosks in Hanoi, Nha Trang and Ho Chi Minh City sell tourist SIM cards, and eSIMs have been legal in Vietnam since 2020. Grab is the easiest way to order a taxi, and its chat translates messages to the driver automatically. Google Maps and offline Google Translate packs help with navigation, but English is not widely spoken outside the big tourist centres.
This is where parents get stuck on the first day: the driver at the exit does not speak English, and the SIM still needs activating when nobody has the energy left for apps. You can handle all of it yourself with an airport SIM, Grab and an offline translator. If you would rather not have your parents sort that out after a long flight, I can arrange a guide and a car for their days out from Da Nang, for two travellers or more, with accommodation booked separately and only your dates needed from your side. Message me on Telegram and I will tell you which pace fits your dates.
What do you need to sort out before booking flights?
Vietnam waives visas for 45 days for citizens of 12 countries, Russia among them, under Resolution 44/NQ-CP , which runs from 15 March 2025 to 14 March 2028. Everyone else can apply for an e‑visa of up to 90 days at evisa.gov.vn . Ask the airline about the passport validity rule before you buy tickets.
Where a direct flight into Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang exists, take it, because a change of plane after a long haul tires people out more than any sight does. Inside Vietnam a plane covers the long legs, and seasonal schedules change, so check them for your travel date.
Step-by-step: how to plan the trip
I build a trip for parents in this order, whatever the region: first the month and the road, then the bases, the daily rhythm and the connection.
- Pick the month from the region table and make sure it does not fall in the rainy season of the centre.
- Cap the road at three hours a day and one change of city every two or three days.
- Choose one region and two or three bases, for example Da Nang with Hoi An and Hue, or Hanoi with Ninh Binh and Ha Long. The ready-made itineraries in our tours show a realistic rhythm.
- Put sightseeing in the morning and leave the middle of the day for the hotel.
- Decide in advance which stops with steps you skip and where your parents stay on board or at the viewpoint.
- Buy a SIM or an eSIM, install Grab and an offline translator, and print the hotel and guide contacts.
Bottom line: what to agree on before the flight
Agree on three things with your parents: how many hours on the road they are ready to sit through, which stops with steps you leave out, and how you stay in touch after landing. Everything else follows from that: the month from the region table, two or three bases, and sightseeing done before the midday heat.
You can build all of this yourself in a couple of evenings from airline schedules and the climate norm. But if you do not want your parents’ holiday to hinge on a transfer that looked short on the map, send me your travel dates on Telegram. I will tell you how many days is enough and which base to start from.
