For a Vietnam honeymoon, I’d pick one of two routes: 10 days from Hanoi down to Hoi An, or 14 days that add a Phu Quoc beach at the end. Both run north to south and let flights do the long legs. The plans below are day by day.

Which honeymoon route fits you: 10 days or 14?

The 10-day route suits couples who want culture, food and one night on the water, and who plan to return for the beach later. The 14-day route suits couples who want the same cities plus four or five lazy nights by the sea. Both start in Hanoi and avoid long overland legs, because every transfer day eats a day of the trip.

If an overnight cruise on Halong Bay is not your idea of romance, swap it for Ninh Binh. The boat ride through the Trang An caves is quieter and cheaper, and it fits into one long day from Hanoi.

What does the 10-day north-and-central route look like?

Ten days cover four stops: Hanoi, Halong Bay, Hue and Hoi An. Hanoi to Halong is about 2.5 hours by road, Hue to Hoi An about 3 hours along the coast, and one flight links Hanoi with the central coast.

  • Days 1-2: Hanoi. Stay in the Old Quarter or the French Quarter, book a water puppet show, and keep one evening free for a slow walk around Hoan Kiem Lake.
  • Days 3-4: Halong Bay. One night on a cruise, back in Hanoi by the afternoon of day 4. I cover how to pick a boat in the Halong cruise comparison .
  • Day 5: Fly from Hanoi to Hue.
  • Days 6-7: Hue. The Imperial City in the morning, then Tu Duc’s tomb by car, the most secluded of the royal tombs and the one that suits two people best.
  • Days 8-10: Hoi An, two nights, with the flight out of Da Nang on day 10.

Go to the Imperial City early. By late morning the square is full of tour groups and the heat is hard on a long walk. For the afternoon I find a single tomb seen slowly beats a rushed round of them in that heat. If you want help choosing between the three central towns, Hoi An vs Hue vs Da Nang lays out what each one is good for.

How many nights should you give Hoi An?

Hoi An is the part of central Vietnam that feels made for two people: a UNESCO-listed old town of yellow houses, a river that fills with lanterns after dark, and beaches a short bike ride away. Give it two nights on both routes. The first evening goes to arrival and the last morning to packing, which leaves one full day for the town itself.

A tailor-made day works well here: a lantern workshop in the morning, a cooking class or a basket-boat ride at noon, and dinner by the river. I put the workshop in the morning and leave the evening for the river, because the lanterns only come on after dark and the old town is at its busiest then, so book a river table early. The Hue to Hoi An transfer is the tight spot: a driver who stops at the Hai Van Pass, a workshop slot and the hotel check-in all have to line up on one afternoon. Our 12-day Sapa, Halong and Hoi An route runs the same north-to-central corridor, with Sapa as an extra mountain stop at the start. Other programs are listed on the Samurai Tour homepage .

How do you stretch it to 14 days with a beach finish?

Add four nights on Phu Quoc after Hoi An: you fly to the island from Da Nang on day 10 (connecting through Ho Chi Minh City if no direct flight fits your dates) and fly home on day 14. Base yourselves on the quieter north side near Ong Lang, since the Duong Dong town center is the busy part of the island. Spend one evening at Starfish Beach and one afternoon on the Hon Thom cable car, which runs 7,899 meters over open water. It sits at the southern end of the island, so plan it as its own outing.

If your Phu Quoc flight leaves in the afternoon, use the morning of day 10 for Ba Na Hills above Da Nang. On a cloudy day the cable car ends above a sea of cloud, a very different Vietnam from the beach one you are about to see. Personally I skip it on a clear day, since without the cloud it is just a crowded ride up.

If you are torn between Phu Quoc and a mountain finish, Phu Quoc or Dalat for a honeymoon compares them side by side.

Which month works for a north-to-south honeymoon?

February to April is the one window when Hanoi, the central coast and Phu Quoc are all reasonably dry at once, and Phu Quoc’s dry season runs roughly November to April. Winter in Hanoi is cool and grey, so pack a jacket for the first days. If your wedding falls outside that window, the guide to honeymoons by wedding month shows which coast to swap in.

What should you book before the flights?

Three things sell out first: the Halong cruise cabin, the Hoi An hotel with the best location, and the internal flights. Book them in that order. Around Tet, the Lunar New Year that falls in early February in 2027, flights and hotels fill weeks ahead and many shops close for several days, so avoid that week unless you want a quiet, local holiday.

Check your visa position on the official portal, evisa.gov.vn , before you pay for anything non-refundable, because the rules depend on your passport. The rest of the route needs only a plan and a few early bookings.

If you want the whole route built around your dates, with the cruise, the Hoi An hotels, the drivers and the flights timed so nothing clashes, message me on Telegram with your wedding month and how many days you have. Booking the cruise and the flights yourself takes an evening on the booking sites, so the part I can take off your plate is the Hoi An and Hue days, where the timing is tight.
