Service in Vietnam is warm and attentive in hotels with official 4 and 5 stars, and the gaps Europeans notice sit elsewhere: the final bill, the meaning of a star rating, and spoken English. Vietnam ranks 64th of 123 countries in the EF English Proficiency Index 2025 , a moderate level, and spoken skills trail reading.
I have lived in Da Nang since 2023 and run tours here, so I look at service the way a guest used to European standards does. Below is what differs on the bill, in the stars, in language and on the road, with 2026 figures.
What is on a Vietnamese bill besides the price?
A restaurant bill in Vietnam adds VAT to the menu price, and pricier places add a service charge on top. The reduced VAT rate of 8% is in force until 31 December 2026 under Resolution 204/2025/QH15, and without a new decision the standard 10% returns on 1 January 2027.

Restaurants and hotels are not on the exclusion list for the reduced rate, but check the VAT line on your own bill. Travel guides put the service charge at 5%, and at 10% in upscale venues, so treat that as a guide and read the exact figure on the menu. Look for small print such as “subject to service charge & VAT” or “++” beside prices, because the total then lands above the number you saw. I always check the total line first. For everyday prices, see a week of real meals in Vietnam .
Can you trust the star rating on a booking site?
Only when the hotel’s category is official. Vietnam rates hotels from one to five stars under the national standard TCVN 4391:2015, registration is voluntary under Tourism Law 09/2017/QH14, and advertising a category the authorities have not recognised is prohibited. The national tourism administration grades four and five stars, and provincial offices grade one to three.

Self-awarded stars still appear. In Hoi An in 2023 the authorities found many hotels calling themselves four or five stars while only 12 had official five-star status, and some then removed the stars from Agoda and Booking. Because others kept them, I treat a star count on a booking page as a claim until the hotel names who graded it. In Da Nang, a city tourism portal listed 49 officially rated five-star properties as of April 2026. The category plaque is supposed to hang at the main entrance.
How well will staff speak English?
Hotel staff speak English well, while taxi drivers and street vendors mostly do not. EF measured Vietnamese reading at 522, writing at 508, listening at 470 and speaking at 461, so a written message works better than a conversation at the desk. Hanoi leads the cities at 532, then Nha Trang at 517, Da Nang at 509 and Ho Chi Minh City at 508. Customer-service staff score 529, above the national average.

I save the hotel address in Vietnamese and use a phone translator with a camera, which covers menus and driver conversations. If you land and need data right away, read the guide to SIM cards and eSIMs .
How much does a spa hour cost?
An hour of massage in a Da Nang salon runs about $10-17, and in a resort spa about $80-140, with a 60-minute signature treatment at V-Senses at Furama near $80. In Nha Trang an hour starts around $4, and in a five-star hotel spa in Hanoi near $58. Sources disagree on the ends of these ranges, so read them as estimates.

What does a ride from the airport cost?
From Da Nang airport to the centre is about 3 km, and Grab costs roughly $3-6 with the price shown before you book. Cam Ranh, the airport for Nha Trang, is over 30 km from town, and Grab charges $10-15 for 45-60 minutes. There is no official taxi tariff, so the in-app price is your reference.
A night landing at Cam Ranh is where this gets tiring: 45-60 minutes of road after a long flight, a fare that climbs in rain or rush hour, and a driver who may not speak English. You can handle it yourself, since the app shows the price and translates the chat with the driver. If you would rather arrive to a pickup that is already arranged, I put together trips around your dates, with the airport transfer and hotels fitted to your budget. Send me your arrival dates and city, and I will reply with a transfer price and hotel options.
Step-by-step: how to set your expectations before you book
These five checks cover the places where expectations break. If you would rather not run them yourself, a ready-made route across Vietnam comes with hotels and transfers already chosen.
- Open the hotel page on the booking site and write down its claimed star category.
- Email the hotel and ask who granted the category: the national tourism administration or a province.
- Ask whether the room price includes the service charge and VAT, and what the total per night will be.
- At restaurants, look for “++” beside prices and judge by the bill total.
- Install Grab before the flight and save the hotel address in Vietnamese.
Bottom line: what to accept and what to check
Expect good service in hotels with official 4 and 5 stars and simpler service on the street and in taxis, where speaking skills score 461 in the EF index. Three checks decide most of the experience: the star status behind a hotel’s rating, the total line on a restaurant bill with VAT and service charge, and a ride booked with the price shown in advance.
All of this can be done on your own: verifying stars, reading the bill, calling a Grab. But if you would rather not track transfers, timings and what is included in the price, message me on Telegram with your plans and I will suggest a format.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to tip in Vietnam, and how much?
Tipping is optional, and when a service charge is already on the bill staff do not expect more. For good restaurant service people leave 5-15% of the bill, and a hotel porter typically gets about $1-2 per bag. Tipping is more common in tourist hubs such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang.
How much should I tip a guide or driver?
A guide on a tour typically receives $10-20 per day, and a driver about half of that. Treat it as a guideline from travel references, since the amount depends on the length of the day and the size of the group. For what a private guide costs, see how to book a private guide .
What does Grab cost from Ho Chi Minh City airport?
Guides give a wide range, roughly $4-10, because there is no official tariff. The app shows the final price before you confirm, and it is higher at night and in the rain.
How long does a hotel's star rating stay valid?
A category decision lasts five years, after which the hotel is reassessed. The authorities review an application within 30 days of a complete file, and the hotel submits a self-assessment with it.
