Seafood in Nha Trang is priced per kilo and weighed raw before cooking, and the same dish costs far more on the Tran Phu seafront than one or two streets inland. The savings come from agreeing the weight and the total before anything goes on the grill.
The seafront premium runs from 1.5 to 3 times, and in 2026 shrimp costs about $9.60 per kg at a market and about $17 per kg in a restaurant. I live in Vietnam and have run tours here since 2023, so this is the checklist I give friends before their first seafood dinner in Nha Trang. The city is usually one stop on a longer coastal trip, and money goes fastest at dinner.
What Seafood Costs in Nha Trang in 2026
Seafood in Nha Trang ranges from about $5.80 per kg for market squid to $115 per kg for restaurant lobster, and restaurants charge two to three times the market price for most species. Both quote per kilo. Lobster has the widest range, from about $33 to $115 per kg depending on size, species and where you buy it. The table shows typical 2026 price floors for the common orders.

| Seafood | Market, $ per kg | Restaurant, $ per kg |
|---|---|---|
| Grouper or snapper | from $7.70 | from $15 |
| Shrimp | about $9.60 | about $17 |
| Tiger prawns | about $23 | about $56 |
| Crab | from $11.50 | from $23 |
| Squid | from $5.80 | from $11.50 |
| Lobster | $33 to $58 | $77 to $115 |
These figures come from 2026 tourist guides and one price table that other sites repeat, so read them as orientation and expect real quotes to differ. Oysters sell by the piece at about $0.60 to $1.20 at a market and $1.20 to $1.90 in a restaurant, and one grilled portion at a street stall is $3 to $8. Size moves the price sharply, so ask which size class the quote covers.
How to Order From the Tank Without Overpaying
Agree the price list, the weight and the total before the first dish is cooked, using the five steps below. Staff net the live animals from the tank, weigh them in front of you and quote a total by weight. On tourist streets the weight is sometimes rounded up in the restaurant’s favour, and a bill can land at double what you expected.

- Find the price list first. Missing posted prices was the main violation in every recent overcharging case from 2025 and 2026, so a place that quotes prices only aloud is the one to leave.
- Pick the animals yourself and watch the scale. Ask staff to drain the water from the basket before weighing, and ask for a reweigh if the number looks high.
- Ask for the total as price per kg times weight, on a phone calculator if there is no language in common.
- Ask whether cooking is included. Some places add $1.20 to $1.90 per kg (30,000 to 50,000 dong) for steaming, grilling or tamarind sauce, and others charge nothing.
- Photograph the price tag with the weight before the dish arrives.
The tourism portal of Khanh Hoa province gives the same advice: ask for the price per kilo and the total before the food is cooked .
Why Tran Phu Seafront Prices Run So High
Tran Phu is the main tourist strip, and the same seafood there costs 1.5 to 3 times what it costs a block or two inland, depending on the venue and the dish. Prices on the parallel streets are closer to what locals pay, at comparable freshness.
Xom Moi, around Nguyen Thi Minh Khai and Hoang Hoa Tham streets, is where local places cluster, away from the tourist strip. The seafront is still fine for the view if you accept the premium and fix the weight and the total before cooking. For dinner itself I pick the street behind it, because the same freshness costs only a short walk.
How the Overcharging Cases Actually Work
The pattern in recent cases is a price that is spoken aloud and never posted. In May 2025 a floating restaurant near Chi Nguyen island billed 0.5 kg of boxfish at about $67, which works out to about $135 per kg. The owner refunded 30% of the bill and was fined for three violations, including no posted prices and no food-safety certificate.
It repeated in June 2026. A tourist from Hanoi in the Lang Chai area was quoted boxfish at about $112 per kg, which made 0.4 kg cost about $45, and no price list was on the table. The inspection on 9 June found no posted prices, no food-safety certificate and no notice of a change of business, and the case went to the Nha Trang ward administration.
A verbal agreement gave no cover either. In a 2022 city inspection of another restaurant, the prices on the bill matched the posted ones, but several dishes had no price tag at all, and the owner said the price was agreed before cooking.
This is where I usually get involved: a traveller who cannot read the menu, and a place that quotes by mouth only. You can handle this part yourself: ask for the price list, watch the weighing and work out the total on a phone calculator. When I run a trip, booking, language and logistics are handled for you, so nobody negotiates alone, and you can look at my tours across Vietnam to see how the coast fits into a route. Where to Buy Cheaper: Markets and Cook-It-For-You Cafes
Markets sell the same catch for roughly half to a third of restaurant prices. Xom Moi at 49 Ngo Gia Tu has about 1,200 stalls, opens at 6:00 am and has the best freshness before 9:00. Vinh Hai in the north sees few tourists, and Binh Tan, the fishing-port market in the south, has the lowest prices and sits about 30 minutes away by bike.

Dam Market in the centre is a covered hall that works in any weather. The first price quoted to tourists there is at least double, which makes it a better place for dried seafood than for fresh. Bargaining is normal at every market, and sellers often drop 30% to 40% from the first price. Check the scale before you pay.
Buying at the market and paying a cafe to cook it works too. The cooking fee is the same 30,000 to 50,000 dong per kg, and near the Binh Tan fish market the quotes run $1.90 to $3.80 per kg. For fruit and souvenirs see Nha Trang markets: what to buy and what to skip .
What a Seafood Dinner for Two Costs
A seafood dinner for two costs about $12 to $24 at a local place and about $24 to $48 on the Tran Phu seafront, by my estimate from per-person prices of $6 to $12 and $12 to $24. A budget local meal of two dishes with drinks is $4 to $8 for two.

The priciest items set the total, lobster above all. One lobster at $77 to $115 per kg takes the whole dinner budget of a table, so if you want one, order it by weight with the scale in view. I’d put the rest of the money into squid, shrimp and fish, which cost far less per kg.
How to Decide Where to Eat
Eat at a place with a posted price list, weigh your order in front of you and agree the total before cooking. For the lowest cost, buy at Xom Moi before 9:00 or at Binh Tan and have a cafe cook it. For the least effort, pick a place one or two streets inland from Tran Phu.
A price spoken aloud, a menu you cannot read, bus and train connections along the coast and bookings that a foreign card does not clear are the usual trouble on a trip like this, and you can sort all of it out yourself with some patience. If you would rather not, send me your travel dates and I will tell you what fits.
Frequently asked questions
Can you haggle in a Nha Trang seafood restaurant?
Restaurant prices are fixed and bargaining is not customary, so save it for markets. What you can push on in a restaurant is the weight and the total before cooking.
Which months are worst for seafood in Nha Trang?
The rainy season runs from September to December, and October and November are the wettest. A storm can limit fishing and deliveries, and floods in November 2025 covered parts of the city. The covered Dam Market stays open in any weather.
What if the bill is higher than the quoted price?
Do not pay until staff reweigh the order in front of you and match each line to your photo of the price tag. Both recent cases, in 2025 and 2026, ended in official inspections.
Is it safe to eat at floating restaurants on the bay?
Avoid rafts that a boat driver brings you to. In May 2025 provincial authorities ordered checks on boats carrying tourists to rafts without a catering licence. Eat on shore, where a price list hangs on the wall.
