Phu Quoc gets about 60 mm of rain in the whole of December and 35 mm in January, with 31°C days and 24°C nights, so a New Year week here is dry on long-term averages. The weather is the easy part. Rooms are the problem: several big resorts were already sold out for the holiday dates in August, and a hotel gala dinner started from VND 2,800,000++ per adult last New Year.

Is Phu Quoc dry on 31 December?

Yes, on long-term averages.

December brings about 6 rainy days, January about 5, and the sea stays near 27.5°C in January, warm enough to swim all day.

A calm, palm-lined Phu Quoc beach in dry-season light, the weather to plan on at New Year.

The reason is the north-east monsoon, which runs from November to April. The wind comes from the mainland side, the west coast sits in its shelter, the water goes flat and clear, and the sun shines up to 8 hours a day. Some datasets show a few cooler nights at 18-22°C, so one light layer covers a beach dinner. For the full year, see my notes on Phu Quoc weather by month .

What does New Year’s Eve look like at Sunset Town?

Sunset Town (Hoang Hon), at the southern tip, is where the island’s big public countdown happens. Two shows run there every evening, Symphony of the Sea at 19:30 and Kiss of the Sea at 21:30, both with fireworks, according to the Phu Quoc tourism portal.

Evenings over the water are part of a Phu Quoc New Year, before the Sunset Town shows begin.

On 31 December 2025 the organizers reported three firework displays in one night: one over the bay in the evening, a second from Kiss of the Sea, and a midnight display they called the longest of the year, with double the usual density. DJ sets ran until dawn. The 2026/27 programme was not published when I checked on 16 October 2026, so expect the same format and confirm the lineup in December.

Hotels around Sunset Town and An Thoi are within walking distance of the main fireworks, which is the practical way to avoid the taxi queue at 1 a.m. For light sleepers, walking distance is better than being next door: the DJ sets run until dawn.

How early do Phu Quoc hotels sell out for New Year?

Earlier than most people expect. Russian trade press reported in August that Radisson Blu Resort already had no rooms for the holiday and that Melia Vinpearl, New World, Regent, The Shells and Soul Boutique had stopped sales. Agents said west-coast requests were the most likely to be refused, while villas and apartments were still available. One agent said bookings were running faster than a year earlier, with trouble starting from arrivals in mid-December.

Beachfront hotels with a pool are the rooms that sell out first for Phu Quoc New Year dates.

Book two to three months ahead at the absolute minimum. In mid-October I would pick a property with free cancellation first and compare prices second.

What does a New Year week cost?

Hotel galas are the most visible extra. Pullman Phu Quoc Beach Resort priced its New Year’s Eve gala from VND 2,800,000++ per adult last year, roughly US$105, with service charge and tax added on top. I treat the ++ as a reminder that the headline price is not the final one, so budget above it.

For a package benchmark I searched Level.Travel on 16 October 2026: two adults, flights from Moscow, departure around 25 December, 7 nights give or take two. The cheapest package started at 258,253 RUB. A beachfront resort, Premier Residences Phu Quoc Emerald Bay, was listed at 686,691 RUB for 8 nights from 29 December to 6 January, and at 880,978 RUB for 8 nights from 31 December to 8 January. Prices move daily, so these figures show the size of the peak-week premium. Ask for a live quote before you pay.

If you fly in on your own, the hotel line and the dinner are what matter. Villa and apartment stays can be easier to find than resort rooms in the week of 29-31 December.

What is there to do on 1 January?

Keep the morning slow and go up. The cable car from An Thoi to Hon Thom Island is 7,899.9 m long, a Guinness record set on 3 January 2018, and it runs above the bay with a view back toward Sunset Town. My pick for a slow first morning of the year is this ride over a boat trip, because the view back toward Sunset Town shows you where the night before happened. Visibility for snorkeling around the An Thoi islands is best from November to April, so a boat day on 2 January is realistic.

For ideas beyond the south, my guide to what to do on Phu Quoc covers the whole island, and if you are still choosing between cities for the night itself, New Year’s Eve in Vietnam compares the options.

Is a New Year tour easier than booking it yourself?

You can book all of this yourself: a room with free cancellation, the gala dinner, the flights. What usually goes wrong is the stitching, when the sea half of a trip has to connect to a second region by hand.

Our New Year 2027 tour to Phu Quoc and Da Lat runs from 30 December to 9 January with five nights on each, in one group of up to 15 people. It includes a gala dinner and beach festival on New Year’s night, a water show with fireworks the next evening, diving at An Thoi and the cable car over the sea. If you want to know how many places are left, message me on Telegram with your dates.

Where does that leave your plan?

Dry weather is nearly guaranteed, so the decision is rooms and dates. Pick the area by the night you care about most: the south for walking to the fireworks, the west coast for beach days. Hold a cancellable booking now, then add the dinner once the resorts publish their menus.

Send me your New Year dates on Telegram and I will tell you which Phu Quoc area fits your plan.

Frequently asked questions

Which beach is best on Phu Quoc in winter?

Long Beach on the west coast, which runs about 20 km. Its northern part is the busiest, with the most restaurants and hotels, while the southern part is calmer. Bai Dai is another west-coast option that stays flat in the dry season.

Are there typhoons on Phu Quoc at New Year?

Almost never. Vietnam’s national tourism administration rates the typhoon risk in the south as very low all year, because the island sits in the Gulf of Thailand behind the mainland. Of the 5-6 typhoons that affect Vietnam each year, nearly all hit the north and center.

Does Tet 2027 clash with a New Year trip to Phu Quoc?

Tet falls on 6 February 2027, so a trip that ends in the first days of January misses it. Tet brings its own spike in domestic travel and some small shops close for several days, so March and April are the cheaper dry-season alternative.
