Nha Trang on New Year’s Eve means 26-28°C days and rain on many of them, because December is the tail of the wet season. You can still have a good trip if you plan for waves, grey skies and a few indoor days; a classic beach week is unlikely.
I run tours in Vietnam, and this is the question I get most in October: is Nha Trang worth it for 31 December. The honest answer depends on whether you are buying a beach or a city. Here is how I would decide.
When Phu Quoc is the better call
If beach days matter more than the city, pick Phu Quoc: it is in the middle of its dry season in December, with roughly 60 mm of rain and a calm warm sea. My own call is that travellers who live for food, markets and cafes stay in Nha Trang even on a grey day, while anyone who needs to swim should go south. I compared the two in Nha Trang vs Phu Quoc , and the island’s holiday details are in Phu Quoc New Year: fireworks, hotels and costs .

How to book without regret
Choose refundable or free-cancellation rooms first. In a week of grey weather a sea-view room loses most of its value, so pay for a location near cafes, the promenade and a taxi rank.

Island boats are the other risk. Trips to Hon Mun and the Four Islands are often cancelled in the wet season because of wind, so book a boat with a free reschedule and keep one spare day. For me that spare day is worth more than a room upgrade, because a cancelled boat with no free day left simply turns into a lost excursion. If you want a gala dinner at a seafront hotel, ask for terms now: the best tables go first. You can juggle all of this yourself by checking the wave forecast each evening and moving bookings, but if you would rather not, send me your dates on Telegram and I will line up the days so the island trip and the spa day can swap without losing money.
A rain-proof 4-day plan
Four days work if each one has an indoor fallback and one day stays free. Day one is for arrival, a slow walk along the promenade and dinner. Day two is the Po Nagar Cham towers, which take about two hours and sit near cafes where you can wait out a shower, followed by the hot springs and mud baths, which work in any weather.

Day three is the island day. Visit the VinWonders park on Hon Tre island, linked to the city by cable car, if the sea allows the crossing, and otherwise swap it with a spa afternoon. I keep this day flexible because a non-refundable ticket for a crossing that gets called off is the classic loss here.
Day four is the spare day and New Year’s Eve itself: a quiet morning, the beach if conditions are good and an early dinner. Dalat is possible as a side trip, but the road takes about four hours each way, so give it an overnight stay, since a single day would go mostly to the road.
What to expect from the weather
December rainfall in Nha Trang ranges from 155 to 281 mm across the climate datasets I compared (sea temperature comes from NOAA satellite data ), and sunny days are fewer than a third of the month. Rain comes in bursts: half an hour in the afternoon or most of a night. January is already drier, though the sky stays clouded and the wind picks up.

The sea is warm enough on paper. The catch is the surf. Travellers report big December waves, murky foamy water, and the city beach can be closed to swimmers during the rainy season when currents get strong. My month-by-month numbers are in Nha Trang Weather by Month .
Midnight and the time difference
Vietnam is UTC+7, four hours ahead of Moscow, so midnight in Nha Trang comes at 20:00 Moscow time. Locals and visitors gather by the sea, and hotels run dinners. Organisers announce the programme close to the date, so confirm with your hotel. New Year’s Day is a day off in Vietnam, but the big holiday is Tet, which falls on 6 February 2027.

Next step
Decide first: sea or city. If it is the sea, look south. If it is the city, Nha Trang works with a flexible booking and one spare day. The weather decides at the last minute while the booking is already paid, and that is where most New Year trips lose money. You can handle it alone by watching the forecast, but I do it for a living.
Message me on Telegram with your dates and group, and I will tell you whether Nha Trang or the south fits better and help put the trip together.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if my island boat trip is cancelled because of wind? Ask the operator before paying whether a cancelled departure is refunded or moved to another day. Most simply reschedule, which is why one spare day in the plan matters more than a room upgrade.
Can I swim with children in Nha Trang in late December? Pick a hotel with a pool and treat the sea as a bonus. Take children to the beach only on calm days without red flags, since waves and rip currents are the main risk in the wet season.
Do I need to book dinner and a taxi for New Year’s Eve in Nha Trang? Book dinner at a seafront hotel or restaurant at least a few weeks ahead, because the best tables go first. For rides, book your hotel pickup or use Grab early, as cars are scarce around midnight.
When do hotel prices in Nha Trang go up for New Year? Rates climb through the last week of December and peak around 30-31 December, so booking in October or November with free cancellation is the safest approach.
