The simplest way to reach Ha Long Bay from Nha Trang is to fly to Hanoi, spend a night there and take a bus to the Bai Chay harbor the next morning. The flight takes about 2 hours and Hanoi to Ha Long is roughly 2.5 hours by road, so a bay trip fits into three days without rushing. If you would rather not juggle the connections yourself, there is an easy way to hand them over.

Day 1: Nha Trang to Hanoi by air

Fly from Cam Ranh airport (CXR) to Hanoi Noi Bai (HAN). Nha Trang and Hanoi are about 1,100 km apart in a straight line, and the flight takes around 2 hours. Vietjet runs 4-5 flights a day, Vietnam Airlines 3-4 and Vietravel Airlines one.

A one-way ticket usually costs $40-100 per person, so check prices two or three weeks ahead. On Vietjet’s Eco fare a 7 kg carry-on is free, and a 20 kg checked bag bought online costs $8. The official baggage fee page lists the current rates.

From Noi Bai, bus 86 takes 55-60 minutes to central Hanoi and costs $2. Sleep in the Old Quarter and take the harbor bus the next morning.

Day 2: Hanoi to Ha Long Bay and a night on the water

Buses and limousine minivans leave Hanoi for Bai Chay harbor from the My Dinh, Gia Lam and Giap Bat stations. The distance is about 153 km on the expressway, which is roughly 2.5 hours, and a seat costs $6-20 depending on the class. You can book ahead on vexere.com .

The cruise operator sets the boarding time, so ask for it before you buy the bus ticket. A bay entry fee of $10-12 per route (260-310 thousand dong with the port charge) is usually settled with the operator, and a night on the water adds about $20-22. Confirm whether it is already in your cruise price.

Day 3: back to Hanoi and the flight to Nha Trang

The boat returns to the harbor at a time the operator fixes, and the ride back to Hanoi is another 2.5 hours. Book the flight home for the next morning rather than the same afternoon, because a late return leaves no room for a delay.

This is the weak link of the whole plan. If a flight or a bus runs late, a cruise with a fixed boarding time leaves without you, and you lose a day and the paid place on board. Every leg can be booked by yourself, and plenty of travelers do exactly that. If you want the connections lined up in advance, I can match the flights, the bus and the cruise to your dates so the boarding time does not depend on a delay. I only need your dates and the number of travelers. Send me your dates on Telegram and I will lay out the options.

Cat Ba as a quieter base

Cat Ba is the island on the edge of the bay. It suits travelers who want a beach and a quiet base, with the bay as a day trip. From Hanoi it takes a bus plus a boat, which costs $10-20 and takes 3-3.5 hours, and the main pier is now Dong Bai in Hai Phong because the Got pier is closed.

Vietjet also flies Nha Trang to Hai Phong directly about once a day, in around 1 hour 50 minutes. Schedules change, so verify the flight on the airline’s site before you book. Hai Phong is the gateway to Cat Ba, and this route skips Hanoi entirely.

If Ha Long is one stop in a longer trip, the routes on the Samurai home page cover the whole country.

Bottom line: what to book and what it costs

Count the transport for one person, one way: flight $40-100, airport bus $2, Hanoi to Ha Long $6-20. That is about $48-122 each way, so $96-244 for the round trip before the cruise itself. Three days is the practical minimum, because two days leaves one night on the water and no margin for a delay.

The plan above is complete, and you can book it yourself, hotel and cruise included. If you would rather skip the timing puzzle, tell me how many of you are traveling and for how many days and I will send a route that fits your situation.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a train or sleeper bus from Nha Trang to Ha Long?

There is no direct train to Ha Long or Hai Phong. Five trains a day run from Nha Trang to Hanoi, and the ride takes from 25 hours 49 minutes to 29 hours 42 minutes, with tickets from $37. Travelers describe the sleeper bus as a route with a transfer that takes about 30 hours, so for most people the flight wins on time and cost.

What is the best season for Ha Long Bay?

Most visitors choose October-November and March-April. Winter on the water is cool and often foggy, and from June to September typhoon warnings can cancel cruises.
