Doc Let is a long white-sand beach north of Nha Trang with calm, shallow water, and it works best as a day trip from the city. The Hon Heo peninsula shelters the bay, so the sea stays flat, and the public stretch is free to enter. Hon Heo itself adds half a day of boats, snorkeling and quiet coves for travelers who want more than sand.

For the wider picture of crowded and quiet Nha Trang beaches, see how Nha Trang has changed .

The beach lies roughly 49-50 km from the center of Nha Trang, which is 1 to 1.5 hours each way, and the public stretch is about 10 km long. A day by bus costs about $11-18, and the driving can be handed to someone else, as I explain near the end.

Is Doc Let worth the trip from Nha Trang?

Yes, if you want a wide, quiet beach and have a free day. Doc Let has pale fine sand, a gentle slope into the water and a sandy bottom without rocks, and the Hon Heo peninsula closes off the bay, so the sea stays calm. The public stretch costs nothing, and families with small children use it for exactly that reason.

The price you pay is distance. The beach is about 49-50 km from central Nha Trang along Highway 1 to the north, so you spend 2 to 3 hours on the road for one day of sand. The city beach is closer, busier and has every service within walking distance. Doc Let has a few cafés and paid loungers and not much else, so it suits people who value space over facilities. For me the empty sand is the whole point here, and if you want a café within a few steps of your towel, the city beach is the better day.

How do you get from Nha Trang to Doc Let?

There are four workable ways: the local bus, a taxi or Grab, a rented scooter and an organized excursion. The bus is the cheapest at about $1.20 each way, a taxi is the easiest at $17-21 one way, and a scooter gives the most freedom for the Hon Heo loop. If time matters more to you than money, take the taxi; if money matters more, take the bus.

OptionTime one wayPriceCatch
Local busabout 1.5 habout $1.20Runs roughly 5:20-18:00 every 100 minutes; last return 17:00-18:00
Taxi or Grab1-1.5 h$17-21A round trip with waiting is $28-36; finding a car at the beach takes time
Rented scooter1-1.5 h$3-6 per dayAbout 50 km each way on a road shared with trucks
Excursionfull day$10-30Hotel pickup around 7:00, back around 16:00, usually with a second stop

Sources list the bus as number 3 and as number 12, and that disagreement is the real trap: a number copied from a blog is worth less than the driver’s yes before you board. In dong the fare is 30,000 VND and a one-way taxi is 400,000-500,000 VND, so keep small notes ready. The Nha Trang excursions guide compares the organized day tours if you prefer a ready program.

Step-by-step: a day at Doc Let without losing the afternoon

Leave Nha Trang before 8:00 and plan to be on the return bus or in a taxi by 16:00, because the last bus back runs between 17:00 and 18:00. The sequence below fits one day by bus, takes about nine hours door to door and keeps the Hon Heo detour optional.

  1. Take a bus around 7:00. The timetable starts at 5:20 with gaps of about 100 minutes, so you reach the sand by 9:00, before the heat builds.
  2. Pay for the equipped section, which includes parking and a shower, and take a lounger in the shade.
  3. Swim in the morning while the water is flat and the beach is quiet.
  4. Order seafood around noon at one of the beach cafés and agree the price of each dish before it is cooked.
  5. In the early afternoon, if you have a scooter, ride about 7 km south to Ganh Nhay beach on the Hon Heo peninsula. Entry is about $2 (50,000 VND).
  6. Start back by 16:00 to be ahead of the last bus.

The plan usually breaks at the end of the day. The last bus leaves before sunset, a car is slow to find at the beach, and there is no ATM on the sand, so one missed departure turns into a long evening. A bus ticket and the timetable are all you need to get there. The part I take over is the awkward one, a driver who waits, the loop through Ganh Nhay and a return before dark, and on your side I only need the dates of your stay. Send me your dates on Telegram and I will tell you which version of the day fits.

What does a day at Doc Let cost?

A day at Doc Let costs about $11-18 per person by bus. That covers the return fare of about $2.40, entry to the equipped section at $1.20-2, a lounger with an umbrella at $3-4 and a seafood lunch at $4-10. The public sand outside the paid sections is free.

Thatched umbrellas and loungers like the paid sections of Doc Let beach, where a lounger costs about $3-4.

Entry is quoted at 30,000 VND in one source and 50,000 VND in another, with a lower child rate, so treat it as a range and ask at the gate. The lounger price is negotiable, so agree it before you sit down. Bring enough dong for the whole day, because the cafés take cash and the beach has no ATMs.

When is the best time to visit Doc Let?

April to August is the best window, and the sea is generally fine from January and from March to September. October to December brings rain, waves, murky water and trash washed up after storms, so those months are the weakest for this beach. The Hon Heo peninsula and Ninh Van Bay follow the same logic, with the calmest sea between February and September.

A calm sea and wide sand in the dry months, when a day at Doc Let beach works best.

I would not plan a beach day here in November or December. Check the forecast the evening before, because a 100 km round trip is a costly way to find a grey, rough sea.

What can you do on Hon Heo and how do you reach it?

On Hon Heo people swim at Bai Be, Truong and Bang beaches, snorkel, kayak, walk the trails and eat seafood, and a speedboat from Nha Trang gets you there in 15-20 minutes. The boat costs about $8-12 (200,000-300,000 VND) per trip or comes bundled into a tour. By road it is around 36 km on Highway 1 to Ninh Da, then on toward Ninh Van.

A headland and coves like those of the Hon Heo peninsula, reached by boat or a long coastal road.

Hon Heo is the peninsula at the southern end of the bay, about 50 km from Nha Trang, and Ninh Van Bay beside it is about 60 km away. Set aside half a day for the loop from Doc Let, because the road south to Ganh Nhay beach is about 7 km. Between the boat and the road, my pick is the boat on a calm day, since the drive spends time that the coves deserve.

Should you sleep over at Doc Let?

Staying overnight makes sense only if you want sunrise and an empty beach, because the day trip already covers the swimming. Doc Let has several resorts, including TTC Van Phong Bay (formerly Doc Let Beach Resort), White Sand Doclet, GM Doc Let, Paradise and Pax Ana. Simple guesthouses start at about $20-23 (500,000-580,000 VND) a night, and camping on the beach is allowed according to Vinpearl.

Most travelers keep Nha Trang as the base and treat this beach as a single day. If Nha Trang is only one stop on your trip, the ready-made routes across Vietnam show how the other stops fit around it.

Day trip, overnight or Hon Heo: how to decide

Take the bus for a day trip if you want sand and calm water for about $11-18. Add Hon Heo by boat if you have half a day more and travel between February and September. Book a night in Doc Let only if you want the beach to yourself at sunrise. From October to December, pick a different day.

The bus and a rented scooter are enough to reach this beach, and a good day here costs under $20. What is harder to judge from a screen is the month and the sea, since in the rainy months a round trip of that length can end on a grey, rough beach. Write to me on Telegram with your days in Nha Trang, and I will say whether Doc Let is worth that day or what to do instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is it Doc Let, Doclet or Dốc Lết, and what should I type into the map?

All three spellings appear, and the Vietnamese name is Dốc Lết. Type that into the map. The name is tied to the 10-20 m dunes behind the beach, so the sand ridges are a useful landmark on arrival.

Are water sports available at Doc Let?

Yes, on the equipped section. A jet ski costs about $12-24 (300,000-600,000 VND) for 15 minutes and parasailing about $24-32 (600,000-800,000 VND). Prices are negotiated, so agree the sum and the time before you start.

What else is near Doc Let if the sea is rough?

The Hon Khoi salt fields are 4-10 km away, the Ninh Thuy fishing village is close by, and the Ba Ho waterfalls are 25-30 km away. All three work on a day when swimming is not worth it.

Are there places to stay on Hon Heo itself?

Bungalows and camping are available on the peninsula. Transport is by boat or a long road, so book ahead and confirm the return transfer when you reserve.
