Da Nang’s New Year’s Eve fireworks are fired from barges on the Han River, and the best free views are the Bach Dang promenade (west bank) and Tran Hung Dao (east bank). Roads near the water close from about 19:00, so be in place by 21:00, according to Vietnam Tourism .

Where does Da Nang watch the New Year fireworks?

Along the Han River, on both banks. The barges sit roughly between the Dragon Bridge and the Han River Bridge, so the whole riverfront doubles as a viewing gallery.

Da Nang is calmer on this night than Hanoi or Saigon. Families spread picnic mats along the river and there is usually room to sit, which makes it the easiest of the three big countdowns with children or older parents. For the other cities, see our New Year’s Eve in Vietnam guide .

Which spot is best, the west bank or the east bank?

Bach Dang gives the classic straight line to the river, and the east bank gives space. The area in front of the Novotel and the Han Market end fills first. The east bank near Vincom Plaza and APEC Park has more room and a good angle back toward the city skyline. Unless the countdown itself matters to you, I’d pick the east bank, because room for a mat beats a front-row spot shared with a wall of strangers. Bach Dang is where the countdown crowd gathers, so go there to hear the count as well as see the fireworks.

What closes, and when should you arrive?

Expect closures from about 19:00 on December 31. The Dragon Bridge and the Han River Bridge close to vehicles, as do the sections of Bach Dang and Tran Hung Dao closest to the water. The Nguyen Van Troi Bridge carries only motorbikes and pedestrians and becomes a popular walking route across the river.

Arrive by 21:00 for a clear line to the water. Eat before 20:00: restaurants inside the closure zone stop taking walk-ins early, and many close their kitchens at 21:00.

Can you see the Dragon Bridge fire show on New Year’s Eve?

Possibly, but check the schedule. The regular show runs every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 21:00. Backpack Moments lists the Gregorian New Year among the major holidays when the dragon breathes fire, but that line sits in a reply under its guide, and no city announcement confirms it. The countdown fireworks have their own timing, so one show cannot stand in for the other.

The show lasts about 15 minutes: 27 fireballs from the dragon’s head, then water sprayed nine times. Stand about 100 meters from the head and you see the fire without getting soaked.

How do you get home after midnight?

Walk first, then call a car. Grab and Be prices jump three to five times after the fireworks, drivers cancel often, and the pickup points at the edge of the crowd are the worst. Walking 20 to 30 minutes away from the closure zone before booking is usually faster than waiting beside the barriers.

Three habits help:

  • Leave five minutes before the finale and walk briskly, or stay an hour and enjoy the after-party. The half hour after midnight is the worst time to move.
  • Withdraw 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 VND ($40 to $80) earlier in the day, because ATMs near the sites run dry and card readers fail under network load.
  • Keep your phone in a front pocket or a zipped bag. Crowded countdowns are pickpocket territory.

The best answer is a hotel within 15 to 20 minutes on foot of the river. December 20 to January 2 is peak domestic travel season, and hotels in Da Nang and Hoi An fill four to six weeks ahead. I have run tours in central Vietnam since 2023, so if you are unsure which neighborhood fits your dates, message me on Telegram and I will name the streets within walking distance of the river. Our Da Nang and Hoi An itinerary shows where people usually stay.

What are the alternatives to standing in the crowd?

Rooftop bars, the beach strip, Hoi An or Ba Na Hills. Lagoon Rooftop Bar and ICON Sky Lounge sit near the Dragon Bridge. After midnight the beach strip along Vo Nguyen Giap stays busy, and the bars at My Khe run their own countdown parties, mostly without a cover charge, though drinks are priced like hotel drinks.

Hoi An runs a lantern-lit countdown on the Hoai River, about 30 minutes from Da Nang. The old town charges 120,000 VND ($5) entry and caps numbers, so it is busy but never overwhelming. Ba Na Hills runs a themed event at the French Village with an early countdown for families. Tickets run 900,000 to 1,100,000 VND ($36 to $44) and include the cable car, and it is cold at the top, often below 15°C.

What is the weather on December 31?

Mild, but not guaranteed dry. Vietnam Tourism quotes 19 to 25°C for Da Nang, yet the central coast is still in its wet season in December, so pack a light rain jacket. See Vietnam in December by region and the Da Nang weather by month .

So where should you stand?

Pick by who you are with. With children or for plenty of space, take the east bank and bring a mat. For atmosphere, go to Bach Dang and be in place by 21:00. For no crowds at all, book Hoi An or a rooftop bar in advance. Whatever you choose, work out the walk home before the fireworks start. Frequently asked questions

What time are the New Year's Eve fireworks in Da Nang?

Most Vietnamese cities fire at midnight on December 31, with displays of 10 to 15 minutes. Family events such as the one at Ba Na Hills run earlier. Da Nang announces its program close to the date, so check it before you book a dinner.

What if it rains on New Year's Eve?

Bring a light rain jacket and keep your plan flexible, because December is wet on the central coast. A rooftop bar with a roof or a hotel balcony within walking range is the safest backup.

Can I come by motorbike?

Roads closest to the water close to vehicles from about 19:00, so park well away and walk the last stretch.

Is it safe to walk back after midnight?

In the main tourist districts, yes. Streets stay busy until 2:00 or 3:00 and the main exits are managed, so stick to lit roads and book Grab or Be with the fare shown in the app rather than using unlicensed taxis.
